Mga sikat na Festivals in Davao: Adto ta Didto! Celebrations that make OFWs miss home!

Davao is home to a lot of our hard-working kababayans. Aside from being hard-working, kilala ang mga Davaoeño at Davaoeña sa pagiging malinis, disiplinado, masayahin, at festive. From family gatherings, such as birthdays and weddings, to community gatherings like fiestas, celebrations in Davao are definitely something to look forward to. Kaya nga hindi natin masisisi ang ating mga kababayang OFW for missing their hometown while abroad.

Screen Shot 2017-01-19 at 9.09.41 PM.png

Sa linggong ito, the people of Davao celebrate their foundation as a city. From March 10 to 16, kaliwa’t kanan ang kantahan, sayawan, cultural performances at competitions.

Kadayawan Festival

Screen Shot 2017-01-19 at 9.15.13 PM.png

It’s one of the most popular festivals in the region and in the Philippines.

Every third week of August, Davao celebrates its abundance of culture, harvest, life, and oneness of the people. Dancer groups from all over Mindanao come to showcase their culture through music and dance. Another highlight of the festival is the pageant, Hiyas ng Kadayawan. This is where the smart and beautiful young women of Davao compete to become the representative of Davao’s colorful culture and tradition.

Like Araw ng Dabaw, Kadayawan also ends with a parade. Pamulak Kadayawan is a parade of flowers and fruits by communities, organizations, and businesses. The flowers and fruits symbolizes the abundance of bounty in Davao.

Screen Shot 2017-01-19 at 9.16.40 PM.png

The parties and festivities don’t just stay on the streets. Different establishments, like GMall, participate during these festivals by having sales and bazaars.

Related: Balik-Pilipinas 2: Kain Tayo Dito!

Aside from these festivals, the different communities in Davao and its neighboring provinces celebrate their heritage during different fiestas. This is why a lot of festivals celebrate bounty and agriculture: Palay Festival, Banana Festival, Durian Festival, etc. But one thing Davaoeños and Filipinos are most thankful for is being with loved ones to celebrate life.

Christmas Tipid Tips!

Papalapit na ang Pasko, Beamer! For most of us, mapapadalas ang pagkikita natin with our friends, relatives, and family. Mas madalas ang tawagan, kwentuhan, at kainan! Pati ba gastusin madadagdagan? Para hindi naman maubos ang 13th month pay at Christmas bonus mo, here are some money saving tips for you and your family this coming holiday season:

Household Tips

Spending more time with our families at home shouldn’t mean our expenses have to go up!

merchants-supermarkets-christmas

Sa ganitong paraan, mas mapipilitan kang mag-stick sa iyong budget. Find a supermarket near you! We’re working on adding more supermarkets to make BeamAndGo more convenient for you.

Related: OFW Shopping Advice: ‘Wag mong bilhin ‘yan!

  • Magsama-sama sa isang kwarto. Christmas is all about spending quality time with your loved ones. Spend more time together in the same room to catch up and bond! Make sure that all lights, electronics and appliances in other rooms are turned off and unplugged kung hindi niyo naman ginagamit. Makakapag-bonding na kayo, makakatipid pa!
  • Hindi mo kailangan ng bagong damit. Mapapadalas ang mga gatherings ngayong holidays. Syempre kailangang maganda at presentable ang suot natin! ‘Di naman kailangang bago, basta malinis at mabango. Kung bibili ka man, buy one or two new items — hindi kailangang bago ang buong outfit! Dahil medyo malakas ang konsumo ng paglaba at pag-plantsa, make sure to wash and iron clothes in big batches.
  • Mix your dishwashing liquid with water. You won’t need too much of these!
Syempre, gusto nating masaya ang mood tuwing Pasko. Pero hindi lahat, nadadaan sa Christmas lights. Decorate your home with simple and affordable ornaments that don’t need electricity. Kung may Christmas lights at mga parol ka, turn these off late at night to save electricity.

Handaan Tips

Paborito nating mga Pinoy ang kainan! If you’re going back to your hometown this Christmas, siguradong excited ka nang matikman ang mga paborito mo. Click here to find out some of our Beamers’ favorite dishes and delicacies from their hometowns.

  • Plan dishes and potluck with your relatives.
  • Make your own meals. Sa Noche Buena, Media Noche, at mga simpleng kainan, cook your own dishes. There’s nothing like sharing a home-cooked meal with the people you love the most.
  • Isahan ang pagluto ng kanin. Naku, kulang ang handa kung walang kanin! Minsan, ito pa nga ang nakakalimutan natin. Most of our favorite Pinoy dishes are best served with warm rice. To save time and electricity, cook rice to the brim. Before meals, reheat your rice for a short while using your electric cooker. Kapag sa tingin mo namang malapit na itong mapanis, cook it as fried rice para tumagal pa ang lifespan nito.
  • Make a grocery list. This will also help you stick to your budget, especially if you’re using BeamAndGo Supermarket GCs.

Gift-giving Tips

  • Make a list. It’s also good to list down the people you’d like to give gifts to. Think about each person and kung ano ang mga bagay na gugustohin niyang matanggap this Christmas. Kung higit sa isang tao sa isang pamilya ang bibigyan mo, why not just give a gift for their whole family? Mas marami ka pang napasaya!
  • Look for items on sale. Hindi kailangang mamahalin ang ibibigay mong regalo. It’s the thought that counts naman! And cheap doesn’t mean low quality. Ngayong Pasko, maglalabasan ang mga sale at promo sa mall — look for these items and stick to your budget. Baka gusto mo rin subukang gumawa ng regalo from scratch! Pwede kang gumawa ng dessert, tulad ng leche flan, cheesecake, kakanin, at iba pa. Samahan mo na rin ito ng Christmas card with a heartfelt message!
  • Recycle gift wrappers. ‘Wag ka nang gumastos pa sa gift-wrapping. Sisirain din naman ‘yun, diba? Use old newspapers, magazine pages, or even manila paper to wrap your presents. To add extra flare, you can paint over your present or add a stylish ribbon.

Choosing a gift for your loved one can become a challenge. Abangan mo sa mga susunod na linggo ang mga tips namin to find the perfect gifts for your family members and friends!

Before we forget, may isa pa pala kaming extra holiday tip para sa’yo: subscribe to your mobile network’s unlimited promos. Siguradong marami kang tatawagan at itetext in the next weeks. Dahil marami kang babatiin ng “Merry Christmas!” at “Happy New Year!”, mag-unli ka na!

Still in the lookout for great Christmas gifts to send back home? All these available at BeamAndGo. Bili na!

7 Tips When Living as an OFW in Japan

When asked, “Kung mag-a-abroad ka, saan ang dream destination mo?” a lot of our answers would probably be Japan. It’s one of the countries where a unique harmony between tradition and modernity take place. The Japanese are also known for developing technology that would make our lives easier, similar to how BeamAndGo wants to make the lives of OFWs easier.

Send Supermarket GCs or care packages using BeamAndGo!

Para mapadali ang stay mo sa Japan, we’ll help you prepare by sharing some tips. Get ready to equip yourself with the basic do’s and don’ts when going to or living in Japan.

1. Follow the rules.

Screen Shot 2016-09-06 at 4.30.02 PM.pngLike we said in one of our previous blog posts, 7 Tips when living as an OFW in Singapore, it’s important to follow the rules. Minsan kasi, hindi natin sinusunod ang mga simpleng batas when it’s inconvenient for us. Sa Japan, mahahalata mong organized ang pamumuhay: from the different shops, to the busy streets, to the train stations. Mahalagang sumunod sa mga rules and regulations, whether or not we are in other countries or our very own.

2. Be Respectful.

The best way to show respect is being polite to everyone. Maraming simple ways to show this. When meeting or saying goodbye to other people, bow politely. When addressing people, add –san after their names. When showing gratitude, offer simple tokens of appreciation. When giving something, offer it with two hands.

Ang dalawang major religion sa bansa ay Shintoism at Buddhism, at pareho silang nagpapahalaga sa environment, kaya dapat natin respetuhin ito by not harming natural resources in any way possible.

3. Get ready for the cold.

Screen Shot 2016-09-06 at 4.29.43 PMIsa sa big difference between the Philippines and Japan is the weather. Marami namang choices sa pag-shopping sa Japan, but things can be relatively expensive, so spend wisely!

4. Enjoy the food.

Screen Shot 2016-09-06 at 4.33.30 PM.png“I-ta-da-ki-masu!” ito ang sinasabi bago kumain at “go-chi-so-sa-ma de-shi-ta!” naman pagkatapos kumain. Food is a big part of Japanese culture and the reason is obvious: masarap kasi! Healthy at tasty ang Japanese food, at marami ka pang options tulad ng sushi, ramen, okonomiyaki, fugu, at madami pang iba.

5. Learn the language.

Screen Shot 2016-09-06 at 4.25.43 PM.png

There is a growing number of Japanese trying to speak better English, but it will be easier for you if you learn simple Japanese terms at least.

6. Keep it simple.

Screen Shot 2016-09-06 at 4.40.35 PM.pngSimplicity and minimalism are some of the attributes of Japanese culture. “Less is more,” ika nga. You can have more space and more time, if you own less material things, na hindi mo naman talaga kailangan – makakatipid ka pa, diba?

For budgeting tips when shopping at the grocery, click here.

7. But don’t be afraid to try something new!

Japan is a wonderful country and it’s culture has so much to offer! Kaya siguradong mag-eenjoy ka sa pagsubok ng mga bagong bagay dito, whether it’s eating new food, visiting new places, or meeting new people.

As soon as you have some free time, gawin mo na ang mga ito para naman madagdagan ang oras mo to take care of yourself. Here are 10 things you can do during the weekend or during your time-off, enjoy!

1. Just relax

Screen Shot 2016-09-23 at 11.15.20 AM.png

Unang-una, kailangan mong mag-relax. Hindi ka robot! Try to sleep longer, take a soothing shower, watch one of your favorite shows, and slow down for a while. Hindi mo kailangang magmadali. Makakatulong pa ang pag-relax para makaipon ka ng energy for the work week ahead.

2. Exercise

screen-shot-2016-09-23-at-11-18-31-am

May tendency tayong kalimutan na we need exercise to stay fit and healthy. This helps us improve our immune system to prevent us from getting sick. It’s good to have at least 30 minutes of physical activity everyday. Pero kung hindi mo ito nagagawa, it’s good to set a time during the weekend for your work out. You can simply jog around your area or follow an exercise routine on YouTube.

3. Read

Screen Shot 2016-09-23 at 11.19.40 AM.png

If your body needs it, your mind needs it too! Reading is your way to exercise your mind. Maraming kang pagpilian: novels, online articles, blogs, news, o iba pa.

4. Go out

Screen Shot 2016-09-23 at 11.21.12 AM.png

Just because you’re working there, doesn’t mean you can’t be a tourist. Siguradong marami pang lugar na hindi mo pa napupuntahan d’yan – malls, parks, landmarks, and other tourist destinations.

5. Eat good food

Screen Shot 2016-09-23 at 11.22.23 AM.png

Paborito nating mga Pinoy ‘to! Although nothing can compare to genuine Filipino cooking, why don’t you try local foods and delicacies where you are? Para maiba naman, diba? Whether those are dumplings in Hong Kong, laksa in Singapore, pasta in Italy or paella in Spain, makakahanap ka ng masarap na pagkain at an affordable price. Since local food is frequently found in each country, siguradong may mga mura kang options para hindi masakit sa iyong bulsa.

6. Go shopping

Screen Shot 2016-09-23 at 11.25.27 AM.png

Whether it’s for you or or your loved ones, masarap mag-shopping. The weekend is perfect for you and your friends to go out and buy stuff. But of course, don’t forget that you have a budget, which you have to stick to. Always look for finds na sulit at swak sa inyong budget!

For grocery shopping advice, click here.

7. Start a business

Screen Shot 2016-09-23 at 11.27.29 AM.png

Hindi kailangang maging magastos ang weekend mo! This can also be a time for you to work on things you can earn money from. Gaano man kaliit o kalaki ang iyong naipon, siguradong may sideline o negosyong pwede mong pasukan.

8. Call your loved ones

screen1280x800-2-2

Dahil busy ka buong linggo, sa weekend lang kayo magkakaroon ng mahaba-habang usapan with your family and friends in the Philippines. May time ka dapat to catch up with your loved ones’ lives and to share your experiences with them. Mahalagang mapanatili ang open communication with your family.

Filipina in Japan gives her thumbs up: “BeamAndGo is here to help your families.”

No matter how modern and fast-paced our lifestyles may have become, ‘di mawawala sa ating mga Pilipino ang pagiging matulungin. Bayanihan is one of the most admirable attributes of Filipino culture. Galing ang salitang bayanihan sa bayan — meaning nation, municipality, and community. Kaya naman, we are always willing to lend a helping hand to the whole BeamAndGo community.

A lovely family picture of Gina and her children

By sending Supermarket GCs to your family in the Philippines, mas madadalian ang pamilya mo sa pag-budget ng mga gastusin.

Sa BeamAndGo, we have a 24-hour promise: your family will receive the gift certificates in 24 hours or less. Sign up na para makapagpadala ka na!

In a change of events, Gina sent Supermarket GCs for Super 8 instead of GMall to her daughter, Arisa. To make sure na makakarating sa kanyang anak ang kanyang ipinadala, Gina contacted Angela, our customer service representative.

Arisa’s friends and our extra smiling Customer Service representative, Angela

Kaya naman Angela is more than happy to help Arisa in her grocery shopping sa Super 8.

Super 8 branches are located in Metro Manila, Cavite, Antipolo and Northern Luzon. For the full list of branches, click here.

More than 30 years na pala ang kanyang ina abroad. She has been working more than 2 jobs, para masuportahan niya ang kanyang pamilya dito. Si Gina lang rin ang nagpapaaral sa kanyang anak and Arisa has always been thankful.

Arisa, her brother and her tita – regular recipients of Gina’s gift certificates

Hindi man daw vocal si Arisa pagsabing mahal niya ang kanyang mama, she always makes sure she shows this in all other ways. She does this by being studious as a Tourism Major at Holy Angel University, Angeles, Pampanga. Pangarap niyang makapagtapos, makakuha ng magandang trabaho, at makapag-ipon ng malaki. She wants to be successful para makatulong sa kanyang mama at magkasama na sila.

More than making it easier for Gina and Arisa to budget and to save on remittance costs, gusto naming mapanatiling close ang bawat pamilya ng ating mga kababayang OFW.
