The Best Kind of Summer Planning for OFWs!

Such is life sa magulang, di ba?

We gotta have a plan.

Monthly-Budget-Check-up.jpg

Limitado ang pera. Kailangang magplano!

Kahit na ano pa iyon, savings for a rainy day na iyon. Sa madaling salita: Emergency money. Wag gagalawin.

No copying ika nga.

May JS prom ba? May bibinyagan ba? May panlalaking binyag na ba? May plano bang party for this year?

Ganda ng pangalan no? Parang emergency fund lang iyan pero for the year lang.

How easy, di ba?

iRemit_central02.jpg

Experiencing Filipino Warmth in Cold Canada

I was in chilly Toronto last October when I had the absolute pleasure of interacting with our counterparts at I-Remit Canada, namely: Belinda Lim-Herrera, Canada Country Manager and Simeon Sarte, Toronto Branch Head. Almost immediately, I was blown away (not by the cold weather) by the hospitality and warmth of the I-Remit team. I was treated to a scrumptious Italian feast at Frankie Tomatto’s in Markham, where we had a ridiculously filling spread consisting of salads, pasta, pizza, meatballs, and of course, dessert.

It was also over lunch when I learned about I-Remit’s beginnings in Canada as International Remittance (former name), rumors of a Jollibee branch opening in Toronto and stories about Filipino-Canadians—from the lola selling Filipino delicacies to support her sister’s grandchildren and remitting the proceeds back to the Philippines at the end of the day at I-Remit to engineers in Alberta who work and live in the plant and shuttled off to town on Sundays to do their errands.

There are over IMG_5287720,000 Filipinos (Commission on Overseas Filipinos) in the country today. When I asked Simon where most of our “kababayans” reside in Toronto, he said, “While the Chinese are in Markham or Richmond Hill, the Jewish are in Bathurst, Filipinos are everywhere.” It’s certainly astonishing how Filipinos can easily adapt to any environment and build a life anywhere. True enough, everywhere I went, I would meet Filipinos who would give service with a big smile.

I also visited the I-Remit branch at 3776 Bathurst St. corner Wilson St., Toronto, where Filipino bakeries, restaurants and groceries have begun to sprout since I-Remit opened its doors in the early 2000’s. Indeed it has become a mini gathering point for Filipinos, but still not quite as huge as Lucky Plaza in Singapore and World Wide Plaza in Hong Kong.

It was so gratifying to hear from the team and customers how BeamAndGo has helped OFWs apportion a specific budget from their remittances to their families’ monthly grocery spending. The company was built precisely for the purpose of helping Filipinos abroad by providing an alternative means for them to provide the basic needs for their families in the Philippines. It warms my heart to hear that the service we built is being used by the people it was intended for.

With the humble beginnings of our partner I-Remit and their story on how they grew the business, we are confident that more Filipinos in Canada will entrust their “alternative remittances” to BeamAndGo.

I-Remit and BeamAndGo Join Forces

BeamAndGo.com teams up with I-Remit to offer direct grocery remittances

(repost from http://business.inquirer.net/196141/beamandgo-com-teams-up-with-i-remit-to-offer-direct-grocery-remittances)

July 29, 2015

BeamAndGo Pte Ltd, an alternative remittance service that guards against misspent funds through digital gift certificates, has forged a partnership with I-Remit to offer over-the-counter payment services for OFWs to provide for their families’ grocery shopping in the Philippines.

BeamAndGo CEO Jonathan E. Chua said, “We understand that many of I-Remit’s customers have apportioned a specific budget from their remittances to their families’ monthly grocery spending. Instead of sending cash, OFWs can now purchase our convenient digital gift certificates which can be redeemed by their loved ones at our participating supermarkets.”

The insight on the behavior of I-Remit customers is further supported by a Bangko Sentral ng Pilipinas (BSP) study on OFWs which revealed that 82 percent of overseas remittances are allocated for their families’ basic needs such as food, supplies, medicine, and utilities.

The partnership with I-Remit, which owns 12 percent of OFW remittance market, will expand BeamAndGo’s distribution network to over 1,400 payment centers. At present, BeamAndGo actively promotes its digital gift certificates in 9 markets–Singapore, Hong Kong, Malaysia, UK, UAE, Japan, Australia, Taiwan and the Philippines.

I-Remit Chairman and CEO Bansan Choa said: “We are committed to serving Filipinos everywhere in the world through our modern and efficient remittance facilities. We are excited to partner with BeamAndGo to offer their innovative digital gift certificate platform to our customers who want to assure their remittances will be channeled specifically to grocery spending.”

Jonathan E. Chua added, “Both firms strive to be an instrument of positive change for OFWs and their families. And together, we can provide a more comprehensive remittance service that addresses the issue of fragmentation and leakage. Our services complement each other and I’m looking forward to a long and positive relationship.”

I-Remit customers can now purchase BeamAndGo digital gift certificates in 3 simple steps: First, they indicate the amount they wish to send, select the supermarket, and complete the form with the recipient’s information. Recipients in the Philippines will receive an SMS bearing a redemption code within a few minutes. With this code, the recipient proceeds to the selected supermarket and presents the code during checkout to redeem.

With partnerships with payment centers such as I-Remit, the Filipino remittance startup expects its customer base to grow from 70,000 to 300,000 and revenues to hit $1.5 million by December 31, 2016.

To celebrate the partnership with BeamAndGo, I-Remit customers will receive a discount of Php50 for every Php1000 worth of digital gift certificates bought from August 1 to October 31, 2015.
